Industrial product catalogues: making AI answers traceable
To make an AI-generated catalogue answer easier to verify, keep the quoted value connected to its product identifier, unit, source document and approved revision. A fluent answer is not a substitute for that record, and a source reference does not by itself prove that a value is correct.
This article proposes a catalogue-owner workflow. It is not a catalogue-management standard, a safety certification or a claim about a shipped AIagent feature.
Start with a small set of approved attributes
Decide what the agent may quote, what needs expert review and what it must not determine. Dimensions may be suitable for an approved lookup; suitability for a safety-critical application may need a responsible specialist. Define those boundaries with your own product and quality teams.
For each approved attribute, a useful review record could include:
| Field | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Product identifier and variant | Avoid confusing similar parts |
| Attribute value and unit | Preserve the meaning of a quoted measurement |
| Source document and location | Let a reviewer find the supporting record |
| Revision and effective date | Distinguish current information from earlier records |
| Owner and approval status | Identify who can resolve a conflict or authorise use |
| Permitted use and review requirement | Define where an automated answer must stop |
The fields are a proposed worksheet, not mandatory fields imposed by an external standard.
A six-step operating method
- Select one product family and register the approved documents and versions.
- Agree attribute-level permissions before making information available to the agent.
- Connect each quoted value to its source location and unit; retain the context needed to interpret it.
- Show a usable reference with the answer and record the version used.
- When information changes, mark affected records and cached answers for review rather than silently merging versions.
- Route missing, conflicting, outdated or unapproved information to the responsible owner instead of filling gaps with a plausible value.
For example, a supplier may change a material specification while retaining a part number. Keep the earlier answer tied to the earlier record, register the new approved revision and review dependent answers. This illustrates traceability; it does not prove interchangeability or certify the part.
Test whether a reviewer can follow the trail
Ask a reviewer to locate the exact source for a sample answer, confirm its unit and revision, and reproduce the record lookup. Then test a conflicting source, a missing attribute and a superseded revision. Record whether each case is answered, withheld or escalated according to the agreed rules.
Traceability supports investigation; it does not guarantee factual accuracy, deterministic model output or safe product selection. Your existing catalogue, ERP, quality and approval systems remain authoritative where agreed.
Company context and limits
AIagent's public overview identifies manufacturing and industrial products as an industry application, not a product line. EAS, ETA and ETA-ONE are the three product lines. The overview also describes source traceability and human review as implementation capabilities. See the company overview; it provides context, not independent validation of this proposed catalogue method.
Validate the method against your own catalogue and review obligations before implementation. No search ranking, citation or commercial outcome is guaranteed.
